AI shopping agents and your Amazon listings

Short answer: On Amazon, the shopping agent that matters most for your listing is Amazon's own. Alexa for Shopping replaced Rufus on May 13, 2026. It answers shopper questions in the main search bar, compares products side by side and puts AI overviews on product pages. Outside agents are mostly blocked: Amazon cut off Meta's Muse in September 2026, and its case against Perplexity's Comet is still in court. Amazon hasn't published how Alexa for Shopping picks answers. Sellers in this directory respond by putting plain-text answers to buyer questions in their bullets.

FAQ

What happened to Rufus?

On May 13, 2026 Amazon launched Alexa for Shopping, which combines Rufus with Alexa+, and discontinued the stand-alone Rufus chatbot. Amazon says Rufus helped over 300 million customers in 2025. Alexa for Shopping is free for all U.S. customers on the app and website, no Prime needed, and can answer questions in the main search bar, compare products picked from search results, show AI overviews in search and on product pages, show up to a year of price history, and schedule purchases when a price drops.

Does Alexa for Shopping show ads?

Amazon's top Alexa executive, Daniel Rausch, told CNBC it will feature ads where they're relevant and 'enhance' the experience, and that it isn't designed to 'narrow' search results. CNBC notes that putting it into search results could disrupt sellers who pay to rank in traditional results.

What does Alexa for Shopping read from my listing?

Amazon hasn't published how it chooses answers. Rausch told CNBC it has access to customer reviews and Amazon's product catalog and can say whether an item is in stock and when it will arrive. Sellers in this directory say it pulls answers from bullets, product details and Q&A. Two cases show how they rewrite listings for it: the Rufus-ready beauty listing (Claude) and the NotebookLM bullets case.

Why did Amazon block Meta's Muse?

Amazon says Meta didn't tell it Muse would access its store, the agent doesn't identify itself when it browses, and it appears to capture and store customer credentials. Amazon asked Meta to remove Amazon from Muse. Meta has said Muse can't see passwords or payment methods. GeekWire notes Amazon made more than $68 billion in ad revenue last year, a business that depends on people browsing its pages and seeing sponsored products.

Can Perplexity's Comet still shop on Amazon?

The legal fight isn't over. Amazon won an injunction in March 2026, the Ninth Circuit vacated it on August 4, and the court denied Amazon's rehearing petition on September 10. The case went back to the district court on Amazon's remaining claims, including terms-of-service claims. Sources don't say whether Comet's Amazon shopping works today.

Does Amazon use its own buying agent?

Yes. Its Buy for Me feature buys eligible products from other retailers' websites on a customer's behalf. Amazon says Buy for Me identifies itself and lets brands opt out. CNBC reports some retailers objected that they never opted in.

Is this the same as Amazon blocking AI agents in Seller Central?

No. Shopping agents act for shoppers. Separately, Amazon's Agent Policy (added to its Business Solutions Agreement on March 4, 2026) lets it restrict AI agents that sellers run in Seller Central, and some sellers report their agents were blocked there. See the Agent Policy case.
